Hi all

I'm new to AROS and have a few old laptops that I have been trying Icaros out on.

A small Samsung NC10 was my starting point and I was quite happy with that (no internet though).

I moved onto a Medion laptop which was also decent (no internet though).

I wanted more though and had a newish ASUS X555L with a 1TB hard drive but on trying to install no matter whether I only use DH0 or if I use DH0 and DH1 the total hard drive space formatted is 8GB, WHY?

during installation you can choose the desired space, maximum is 120 GB per partition

So a 1tb hard drive is pointless?

No it's not useless, thanks to hdtoolbox after or before the installation of the system you can create more partitions by referring to the filesystem limit

Each one 120gb in size?

When I boot with the AROS Live CD now and open HDToolbox it shows the HD as 7.8GB and I'm unable to change the size.

yes, currently with aros if you want to use all the disk you have to proceed in this way

Is there a step by stepguide on how to partition a HD in HDToolbox as when I boot and then open HDToolbox I cannot seem to adjust the size to anything over 7.8GB

Aros only reads your swap partition. Rest it can not understand or read at all. That is at least what I think happen. You should open hd-toolbox and see what is read from there.

first you must make sure that your system has the requirements to run aros, it is important to understand at least if you have compatibility with regard to the ethernet card, it is the minimum, there is a guide on the cd of icaros desktop for installation, should be in the storage drawer, currently I can not tell you more about it because I do not have a computer available for it, my current is incompatible, however the guide is clear

There is no practical point into a terabyte-sized hard drive with AROS. SFS partitions can't be bigger than 128 GB (with a safer capacity of 120 GB, as someone already suggested) so, in order to use the full size of your drive, you'd be forced to create eight 120 GB sized partitions.

But... to do what?

AROS inherits from other 32-bit operating systems the same limitations. You'd probably have issues with any file greater than 4 GB, whose content would probably be backups and ultra-definition movies AROS would have issues playing, since no hardware acceleration is provided. AROS games aren't big like current mainstream ones. So, there is really no point in giving AROS such a big disk size to play with.

Moreover, is your TB drive already partitioned, or is it clean?

If it's CLEAN (which means there are NO PARTITIONS at all) and HDToolBox can't create partitions bigger than 8 GB, that would mean AROS had issues reading your drive geometry. This would be a bigger problem than the simple limits of SFS filesystem. You'd be forced to use a smaller drive. Or an external USB drive.

In my opinion your X555L deserves a better than 'AROS-only' use. Please consider splitting your drive into two parts and destinate a bigger one to either Windows or Linux, and the second to AROS. The best would be creating a Linux-based partition (where you may decide to install hosted AROS) and an AROS native one, so you can dual-boot.

This disk limit is very frustrating and embarrassing for whatever attempt at a serious OS, so someone (sorry, I am not coder) should help with this as a higher priority than other irrelevant tasks and/or apps.

You can alway create a NTFS or EX-FAT32 partition for data. They should work with bigger partitions. But you'd still need to boot AROS from a 120GB max SFS system partition.

I have a Medion MIM laptop with 40GB HD, 20GB for boot and another 20GB for Work, no issues. When I try to create a partition on the 1TB HD I am not able to create a boot partition any bigger than 4GB.

You can set up a (bootable) System partition of 2 GB (Aros is slim) and one or more Work partitions of more than 5 GB.

Is there any chance of the filesystem limit being lifted?

I would like to be able to use the 1TB storage, I have music, videos etc and if I wished to use the laptop as my full time laptop then 1TB storage is not overly large.

I do not want to partition it in numerous small partitions.
