Hi,

Wanted to ask who to contact for the state (actually lack thereof) of the Aros archives ?

- Unable to comment
- Unable to rate
- unable to add pictures

Normally not something i spend too much time on (or to be honest actually care about anymore) but when other people start uploading (really ages old) out of date crap that you wouldn't even give to your own mother then i do wish to make a comment and point the reader to the correct location of the (more up-to-date) files. Uploader is not in any way taking any responsibility for support and as such i would rather see these files removed.

A better solution would be to upload an up to date archive (which i'm more than willing to do, and as such also offers me to replace current uploads if not mistaken) but it seems uploader was impatient and did not care to wait for the official release of a new updated version (heck i don't think he even knows there is a new candidate waiting to be released).

In case uploader feels offended then please be offended. I'm sure there are good intentions there (which i appreciate) but simply asking for information would have been a far better approach.

If someone (heavens forbids) downloads this crap there would be such a negative experience for both AROS and the person trying to make any sense out of this (these) download(s) that you won't see him (or her) for the next ten decades (at which time i hopefully have put all this crap to rest and am enjoying things from my coffin).

I thank you for your time and apologize for wasting it by reading this message.

Sincerly,
Ron.

Hi Ron

some productivity software are no longer up to date, I don't see the reason to delete them if they work and some like them, however you used to write here in the forum if you had some problem with an archive, for example I was wrong to upload and asked for removal, but I understand that currently there are very few resources and time

have a good day

If that would to be the case for those files you uploaded then yes i would agree.

Yes, and unfortunately very limited, so please forgive me for acting all grumpy.

That is why ALB42 has setup a fully automated build-server here

And that is something completely different then downloading stuff from ALB42's (front)webpage (instead of looking a little further down on that page) and upload it to the archives. The stuff upfront is just that: "a front-page" and one which is hopelesly out of date. That is why furtherdown that same page are some links that direct you to the URL i've just posted.

So instead of pestering people with a 3.1.1 trunk version from 2017 and a 3.01 release from around that same era it would be better to have uploaded the latest of the latest and doing so every night again and again and again and again ..... now perhaps you can see the uselessness of that ?

I find it very usefull and normal to upload a full release version (or a trunk version from time to time if it is interresting enough for AROS/Amiga(OS)/MorphOS), and for sure i will do so (if ALB42 does not beat me to it).

The versions you've uploaded are not (officially) supported anymore: not by me, not by ALB42 and not by the Free Pascal development team itself. So that is asking for trouble for those people using it. I neither have the time to explain all this and having to guide those into cleaning up the mess and making a new install as well as am unable to provide support for these versions.

fwiw: i seem to remember having had a similar discussion with wawa (at least he asked  :P ) regarding the sources of Free Pascal for AROS. These are stored at the Free Pascal svn servers and as such does not have to burden the AROS source-tree or Aros archives. Again the latter could probably do with a source-release when a new point release is made. But then again Free Pascal itself keeps track of point releases as well and can all be found on their ftp servers (and that includes the sources for supporting AROS, Amiga(OS) and MorphOS).

If you really want to preserve then preservate the MUI class wrappers that ALB42 wrote. Afaik there are only 2 places in existence where they reside a) on ALB42's buildserver and b) on ALB42's github account. (well i have a copy of them as well  :) ).

I thank you and despite my perhaps negative way of communicating i wish you all the best. Like i said: i understand that you probably have the best of intentions.

hi man
The original reason for my post is to be able to use the Aros archives to comment on your uploads and/or request for the AROS archives admin to remove those files (as i am not able to).

That question is still open as i'm currently unable to and it is a question that was not meant for you @salvatore.

Upload (to the archives) of a new version will happen whenever Free Pascal 3.2rc1 will become final.... Was promised 6 months ago so ..... 2 more weeks  :D

Thank you for your patience,
Ron.

I too wanted to delete an archive that I was wrong to upload, it was not done (I made the request here, as was the case in the old forum) as far as freepascal is concerned I can advise you to write in the specific section of the forum that on aros-archives there is an obsolete and no longer usable version

I've no way to improve the status of archives functionality unfortunately.
But I can delete files if needed: please list links to readme pages of files to be deleted in this thread and I'll delete them in about a week... if there is no objection on the deletion of those files, and no objection on this procedure either, during those seven days.

@cavemann (and other contributors)
Perhaps not the time or place but this gives me the oportunity to thank you and other contributors/porters for their (continuous) work.

... and no objection on this procedure either, during those seven days.
I'm more than willing to accomodate to whatever procedure is in place (or what is most convenient at this point in time).

For me that started with attempting to comment on the uploads as that would also have given the uploader an oportunity to address the issue him/her self. tbh, at that point i was not aware that uploader was (indeed) our dear friend salvatore that also post in these forums.

A question for verification: if someone uploads something to the aros archives and has the upload phassphrase protected then there is not any means for a third party to 'upgrade' the upload to a newer version, correct ?

If that would to be the case then what is the common procedure to follow if the third party wanted to 'update' an out of date upload ? (I'm also here thinking of uploaders being mia or perhaps even not alive anymore).

The files i'm currently most concerned about are:
1) http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.php?function=showfile&file=development/language/fpc-3.1.1.20170826.arm-aros.lha
2) http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.php?function=showfile&file=development/language/fpc-3.1.1.20170826.i386-aros.lha
3) http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.php?function=showfile&file=development/language/fpc-3.0.1.i386-aros.lha

At this point in time i'm (still) assuming that the old 2.7.1 version http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.php?function=showfile&file=development/language/fpc-2.7.1.20131120.i386-aros.tgz) will be 'updated' by ALB42 at some point. Yes it is really out of date and also delivers a terrible experience but at the same time the date of the package will tell you that.

Also reason for me to upload a 3.0.4 version (which i wanted to avoid and directly jump to 3.2 if it wasn't for the everlasting delayed release for that version). Version 3.0.4 does not deliver a very good experience for those that like to compile their sources for the other Amiga related platforms.

I wanted to post (also for myself) the replacements files from ALB42's webserver but i would need some time to verify the correct versions (and verify the package contents). So i leave that for (myself for) later.

I apologize to those for having wasted their time reading these ramblings,
Ron.

hi and sorry for inconvenience ron
It's ok salvatore. No need to apologize. Instead i apologize for not having recognized you as the uploader.

hi and sorry
Sometimes it makes sense to upload (very) old version of a particular software. If even for preservation.

That still could make it a negative experience but a uploader could warn about that in the comments of his/her upload. For example you could write in the upload comments:
Quote
Please be warned that this upload is out of date and that this software package is not being developed (for AROS) anymore. As such it is possible that this software does not function properly or contains bugs. Reporting those bugs or asking for fixes would therefor be a waste of time for everyone involved.

Please take this into consideration before downloading, installing and using this software and/or before asking for help on the forums regarding this software package.

And in case there is replacement software, you could also add:
Quote
This software has functionaliy that is also supported/incorporated into "name title of other package". Please consider to use that as a replacement and/or an alternative for this software package.
It is not something mandatory but just something i came up with and allows you to warn end-users for certain situations. Use and/or abuse it to your delight  :)

Kind regards,
Ron.

I was unaware that commenting was not possible. Please don't hesitate contacting me when there's a problem with the site. I don't always check all functions when I update the base website engine.

I'll look into the commenting problem within the next few days.

Edit: Commenting works now. Can't find any issues with uploading images, uploaded one just fine. And I also just voted for a file.

Also, monthly stats should be working now again.

(Do note that while I do have the privileges needed to delete files and manage content, that is really up to the site content managers ball000 and 4play. I don't want to mess with their idea of how to moderate uploads, images, videos, comments etc. I just handle the website engine and server.)

A note on passphrase protection. The passphrase is not enforced by the system. It's simply there to support the moderators when approving files. A moderator will not be stopped by the system from approving a file with the wrong passphrase.
