It seems as though the network connectivity works fine with the crash causing samba share set - it is not set to active, so I will leave it alone; as it is not causing a problem.
I am using a USB key to transfer data over - works just fine.
For everyone's information - I inserted a SD card, but it is not recognized.

It looks like Fn+F7 disables the touchpad, so problem solved there.

Next job - get all the applications I need installed.

Yes SD Card is not supported, it works if you use SD/USB adapter instead

Regarding Apps to install, on AROS One if you go to Extras you will find almost all existing "updated" Apps for AROS !

Ok, so I have been putting together a list of all the applications I want to use.

I have been through all the applications AROS has out of the box, and it looks like the best apps are as follows:

Web Browsing - Oddessy web browser
Playing Music (MP3 files) - Mplayer
Watching Films (MP4, AVI files, etc) - Mplayer
Image viewing - Multiview
File management - Directory Opus

These applications all work well - impressive!

I cant seem to find applications to do the following jobs in AROS or online - can anyone reccomend software to do the following:

RSS Feed viewer
Viewing/Editing documents (Libre office ODT format, Microsoft word, etc)
Viewing ebook files (*.epub)
SSH Client
Xmpp chat client
Matrix chat client
Full disk backup to external hard drive
Vista landscape generator

Any pointers would be welcome!

Unfortunately, the Applications you mentioned do not exist on AROS !

Thanks - I will give those apps a spin.
So - it looks like I have taken the installation of AROS, and the usage of AROS applications as far as I can take it.

AROS as it stands reminds me of Linux versions 0.x and 1.x in the 90s - tricky to install, patchy hardware support, and missing a few key applications.
Having said that, AROS has impressed me - it is fast, stable, and great fun to use.
I will be sticking around for the long term - I am confident as time passes things like hardware support and application availability will improve.
I think AROS is on the same path as Linux - and Linux today supports all hardware, installs in 30 mins, and has tens of thousands of applications.

I have copied all my ADF and Amiga ROM files to the ZG5, so now Janus-UAE is up and running - now all the games I copied from my Amiga to PC (via a read floppy, send down a serial cable, then write to an ADF file on the PC program) - now run on AROS.

You can find some online resources for example to convert your office files, audio, video etc ..., for chat you can use the bitlbee(www.bitlbee.org)service with Wookiechat even if it is a classic client, for the backup you can save system files and yours Documents on a another partition or on cloud I use adrive.com that is accessible with Odyssey, Enjoy whit aros!

On AROS One x86 in the Emulators /AMIGA folder is WHD_MENU (see screenshot), a nice GUI preconfigured to run Amiga WHDLoad games, for good compatibility use Kixckstart 3.1.

I found a more performing laptop compatible and it costs very little the model is Acer Aspire 5630 only the wifi card must be changed which also costs little

For a backup solution, since I have split the partitions between the OS (DH0) , and all my files (DH1) ; I am going to take the simple approach of using directory opus to lha archive all the files on DH1 onto a USB I have spare. I just need to remember to update the backup every now and again.

I can't seem to find any rsync type tools anywhere, so I will take the more time consuming approach of backing up everything every time.

The other thing is that hopefully when it comes to upgrading AROS to version 1.9, I can just overwrite DH0 and all my files will still be there on DH1 when I boot up the upgraded OS.

On AROS One 1.9 at the moment there are not some updates on the system files, only a few files, system icons change, by default there will be the new White drawer icons, you can still install the classic Blue icons through special installer.

For those who do not want to reinstall from scratch I will create special installer updates that include only the updates.

Tp synchronise folders have a look at BackupCopy - it has options to mirror and synchronsie from source to destination. Yes it is just command line; one of thse days I'll get around to finishing the GUI for it...

Ok, so one more thing. 

I was wondering if there was any way to see how full the disks are?

I am missing the old Full/Empty gauge that used to appear on the left side of the window when you opened a disk icon.

Can I put this in as a feature request?

From icon information you can know the space used and the space left.
If you enable the bottom bar in the window you can also know number of folders and files in the window and space occupied

Hello all - again.

Hope you all don't mind me bringing an old thread back, but I have made some progress on connecting the laptop I use for AROS (an Acer Aspire One ZG5) to a monitor.

I tried a VGA to HDMI adaptor, and this did not work.

I recently got hold of a standard VGA cable, and I have a monitor that has VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs.

Plugging a VGA cable in to the laptop and monitor gives a picture on the monitor when AROS is booted.

The only limit seems to be that the "Normal" option has to be picked in the boot menu, which gives a square picture on the rectangular monitor - so two black areas to the left and right of the picture.

Any other option in the boot menu will give a rectangular picture, but there is a shimmering effect to the picture with these options - which makes AROS unusable as the picture would cause instant eye strain!

So - don't use a VGA to HDMI adaptor - use an old VGA cable.

I thought this might help someone else, so I wanted to post my findings.
