I have installed AROS One 1.7.
Looks like I need to install the newer one - 1.8.

The other thing I was wondering about is how to set up the wi-fi.
If someone could give me some pointers on this, I would be grateful.

For Wifi I'll make you an exaustive screenshot created on Z5, with all the necessary options :)

It is better to install AROS One v1.8, it will be much faster than v1.7, I deleted thousands of small images that were not needed.

AROS One v1.8 includes many updates, it pays off.

To install AROS One v1.8 without destroying everything, as soon as you start AROS One, format the two partitions and then reboot the system with the ISO and do the same installation prodeura

Much obliged on the wi-fi settings!
Been tinkering with them, but can't connect to the router.

I will update to 1.8 as well.

From this screenshot you can see how easy it is to configure Wifi on AROS, it's like being on Amiga, no Script, no Shell ;)

At the moment if you are using Aros One v1.7, go to user-startup and change all Assign necessary from SYS:EXTRAS to DH1:EXTRAS, but as said it is better to install AROS One 1.8 which has many updates

As you can see my Z5 is coonected on the Net with AmiTube

A few things you might try (btw, I'm assuning here you're using atheros5000.device, the SSID and passphrase are set up via the wireless networks tab and the laptop connects via OK with Windows meaning no hardware issues):

  • Try setting up IP addresses manually as sometimes there are issues with DHCP.
  • Only have one network adapter activated (i.e. just wi-fi, not wired as well)
  • Don't start network on boot, and from the shell try 'c:wirelessmanager atheros5000.device verbose' which will give plenty of information on what is actually happening (or not)
  • You could try not starting network on boot along with the executing the attached script; my old USB wi-fi dongle would never connect using the start on boot option but the script would get it going.

I hope something here helps,
Nigel.

@ntromani

The gkb user is using  Acer Aspire One Z5 so no script is needed , Windows is not connected in any way with AROS, practically it is as if it does not exist.

To connect to the Acer Aspire One Z5 Network (Wifi or LAN), you can do it directly from Network Prefs also from a PendriveLive, with AROS One you can practically connect to the Net by even a Live DVD.

Ther Windows comment was simply about doing an independent (of AROS) test of the hardware (no point chasing software or configuration problems is it's a faulty wi-fi card).

Yes, the script shouldn't be needed, but equally with my old USB wi-fi dongle that should have worked from boot but didn't, and always needed this 'start-stop-restart' approach via the script to get it working. Just a suggestion. something to try if nothing else works.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Yes with the USB Wi-Fi dongles this happens, it happened to me too, with the built-in Wifi/LAN Cards you should not need the script, your script still remains a second chance should you need it.

Back again.

I have updated to 1.8 with no problems.

I have been trying to get the wi-fi working.
The wi-fi works fine if I boot into Windows 7, so the hardware is sound.
in AROS, I have gone into network, set the card to atheros5000 , and I have tried DHCP and manually configuring the IP addreses.
For each instance, when I press save in network, a wireless manager icon appears on the desktop.
Clicking this icon lists all the wi-fi networks, including mine.
However, when I type in the password and click connect - nothing happens - the wi-fi list dialog box just stays there refreshing itself.
My wi-fi is a bt hub with WPA2.

The other thing I noticed is that there is a small trapdoor on the underside of the laptop, and opening this seems to show some kind of card that has been installed - I am wondering if this is some kind of 3G modem. Could this interfere with the wi-fi?

Don't use a static IP, leave everything in Automatic, if the icon appears and the Available Networks means the Card is working, follow and use my config shown in the screenshot.

After saving do a reboot and make sure you put the tick on "Start Networking ...."

Also make sure the password is correct, copy to a text file and do a Copy-Paste, on Z5 alternative key F12+C (Copy) / F12+V (Paste).

If the kind of 3G modem doesn't interfere on Win7 it shouldn't on AROS either, for WPA2 support, I also have a WPA2 Network and Z5 with AROS works fine.

Help!

Strange, have you verified the saved password if it is correct, verify it from the file "Wireless.prefs"

The" Wireless.prefs" file is located in the path "Prefs\Env-Archive\SYS\Wireless.prefs

Inside you will find this:
Code: [Select]
network={
ssid="network name"
psk="xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
scan_ssid=1
}

@gkb

Do try starting the wi-fi manually with 'c:wirelessmanager atheros5000.device verbose' from the shell; the output from this could shed some light on the probem. Of course if you add '> ram:log' at the end the output will be piped to the 'log' file for detailed inspection.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Hello all.
I am going to have to apologize to you all!

It turns out that the wi-fi was working fine.
I opened the odessy web browser to try to see if I could get any hints about the connection not working - and google popped up.
It looks like I had the right settings in networking, but the wireless connection manager GUI implies that you have to type in the router password and hit connect. It turns out that you do not need to do this, the connection manager can just be ignored.

Anyway - I am posting to you all via the medium of AROS!

Thanks to you all for your advice.

I spent most of last night playing around to learn the OS - and I have to say I am impressed.
It's an Amiga - in 2022!
AROS is very fast and snappy to use - this 2008 ZG5 will run rings around my 2 year old Windows 11 i4 laptop.
The nostalgia is great as well - Directory opus, There is a boing ball demo, etc.

It looks like the major technical hurdles have been solved - and now I can configure the OS and install some applications.

I have a few queries though:
- I tried adding a samba share to the mounted shares in networking, but this caused a crash. I tried to take the share details back out, but they re-appear when I reboot. Is there a config file I can edit to get rid of the samba share I input?
- Is there a way to change the screen brightness?
- Is there a way to disable the touchpad. I am using a USB mouse, as the touchpad is unusable.

I am happy that on your Z5 everything works perfectly on AROS One v1.8.

I use a Wireless Mouse, but the Touchpad works fine for me. Regarding Samba it seems it needs to be updated, here on forums this problem was mentioned.

For brightness you have to use the Fn + Keys Sun, the FN key is below left next to CTRL and the 2 Sun keys are below right

RDesktop works well although the free AROS version is limited and only works if you connect to WinXP.

For swapping Files if you activate NTFS you should see the Win7 data you have on the other partition, or use a PenDrive or External HD USB.
