Hi 👋

I have finally got around to getting spare hardware to give aros a run. Very Beefy hardware if I may add 🤭. An xeon nehalem. I have a nvidia 250 gts. That is supported. A usb ethernet adapter with support. Though I'm thinking about using a network card .

1. What is better supported and "sounds better". With the quotes keeping in mind sound quality is personally objective. Maudio 2496 or sb live?

2. I have a cf card with amigaos 3.9. Is there support to boot this card. Via uae?

3. Is there a discord available or irc. To chat with fellow users?

4. What's the preferred way to run aros? A distro like icaros? Or vanilla aros? With of course running on hardware the preferred method to run os.

5. What is the preferred method to port software? Location of documentation?

I dont want to saturate this thread with 99 questions. That's why I ask for chat area. But the above five are my primary questions. Thanks for reading and if you answered my questions. Thanks for taking the time to answer. 👍👋

Hello and Welcome,

For 3), check this link: https://ae.amigalife.org/index.php?topic=615.0
For 4), most users run Icaros as it is preconfigured and has much higher usability than vanila AROS build
For 5), some poople use native compilers on AROS, some use cross compilers on Linux. If you want to quickly get a cross-compiler working, build AROS from source following this instruction: https://github.com/deadw00d/AROS/blob/alt-abiv0/INSTALL.md

as for the choice of the distribution I use my customized and updated with the latest fixes, it can only be used in native mode and is called tiny aros, there is a special thread where it is discussed, the sound card I recommend is a common sb live :)

to compile the software under linux is the best thing and maybe a mini guide on how to do it would be appreciated, as deadwood already said the first thing to do is compile the source tree for the rest I don't know how to help you :-\

Thanks, I dont mind working in the native environment. I dont use linux. Is git included in the development bundle? Last time I use vanilla aros. I had to install alot of software to get it functional.

I just bought a aspire laptop. But it has no cd rom. And only has one ide adapter 😂. The zg5. Will I be able to make a mbr usb bootable disc image? Taking the laptop apart was rather tedious to.

Also, how is the multicore support. And does the 32bit support pae? Or can the ram disk use the extra ram space? I assume for amiga Compatibility. It wouldn't work any.

Git is not include AFAIK. For full software package, use Icaros. Vanilla AROS is meant to be only core system files.

There is no multicore support nor pae support. You are limited to ~3GB (1 GB reserved for devices address space)

The best option is installing vmware player or another virtualiser on any PC, downloading Icaros Live! from www.icarosdesktop.org and making a USB installation pendrive as explained in the user manual of the distribution. Use that procedure only: tools like Rufus and uNetBootin won't work.

Or, even better...

Nope. There isn't. But I guess creating some would be easier if at least the security part would be handled, porting this:
https://github.com/jens-maus/amissl

There are already some cozy applications on MOS/AOS4 using it. And even a Hollywood plugin. But until we get this, we won't get what's based on.
