Deal Breaker

In my opinion not being able to get on the net is a deal-breaker.
Installed ICaros on my Asus x55vd laptop with a Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 Ethernet card and Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 wireless card.
Tried all the drivers in the hope one would work, but no luck.

So what are my options? is it possible to put in a request for a driver?

See if you can source a Netgear WG111v3 (that exact model) wifi dongle from ebay; they work really reliably with aros using the realtek8180.device driver.

I guess that is one way to resolve the problem in the short term.
The Asus laptop I have (X55VD) only has two USB ports (close together), because of the width of the WG111v3, it would render the second port inaccessible.

I don't know much about programming but the network card drivers are available for Linux so I assume the source code is also available.
Would it be possible to port it over and how much effort would that take?

Besides already suggested by ntromans:
- Run Icaros with virtualization software on a host OS of your choice.
- Run Icaros Hosted on top of Windows
- Run Icaros Hosted on top of Linux

All have their pros and cons but at least would be able to provide network access to/for Icaros.

Yes you can always try that path.

Don't hold your breath though... unfortunately there is a serious shortage on developers.

Magorium I don't know if the situation has changed but in the manual on page 36 under "Installing Windows host ICaros Desktop" is highlighted

Please beware of the fact that Windows-hosted AROS is still in its “infancy”.
There is no network nor audio support for this hosted flavour, and many AROS programs will fail to run either.

Indeed, it is my mistake.

The manual is correct. I checked before answering but forgot (it is not that visible for me) i was sideloading Linux.

So, to correct myself windows hosted Icaros currently does not support audio and networking. So in that regards it isn't a viable option for your case.

I don't think you can do anything but use the usb port and a leave it free maybe putting a hub

There is no driver for your network cards, so you either decide to use the USB wi-fi dongle you've been told, maybe using a cable to fix your space issue, or, BETTER, install Linux as host (real) operating system on your machine and THEN, install Icaros Desktop hosted on it. The procedure is simple, the software compatibility is high, you get network and audio support.


Forget the Windows hosted option: it's too raw and I am abandoning it with Icaros 64. If you wish to run Icaros hosted on Windows, even for 32bit, choose VMware Player instead.

I run Icaros hosted on Mint.  Works fine on the Lenovo laptop with network and audio.

First up I want to congratulate you and the team on the efforts on keeping an Amiga-like environment alive.

What mechanism do you have in place to record user requests?
I am sure you would agree the success of any operating system is very dependent on the availability of the supporting device drivers.
ASUS is a well-known brand, the AR8161 and AR9485 chipset are used in about 6 difference computer brands.
If it is the case more developers are needed to share the load what efforts are being taken to improve the situation?

I have been following the AROS project over the years and have a look-in-see every so often hoping it can be used as an
alternative to the mainstream OSs. If you said to me YES, we will put it on the "todo list" but it is not a priority so you will have to wait. I can accept that.
Maybe building the user base be expanding hardware compatibility should be the priority before moving forward and developing a 64bit version?
