I guess not all of them are compatible.
It seems I may be able to pick up an 8800 GTX for around $15. However, the support page says "2d works but no accelerated 3d" and links to a non-existent page on aros-exec.org for more information... Can @mtrr or indeed anyone confirm that accelerated 3d now works on the 8800 GTX?
Indeed, it's quite strange that 3D doesn't work on 8800 GTX BUT works correctly on the other variants of the same chip: 8800 GTS and 8800 GT. I can only tell you at home I have a 7800 and it works well in both 2D and 3D. Pay attention to monitor frequencies, though.

I'll probably forgo the 8800 GTX and get an 8800 GT instead, no matter what @mtrr reports back. It costs about the same and seems to have working 3d. Compared to the 8800 GTX, its performance is only slightly worse and its power consumption is much better. In any case, I guess either is sufficient for most games on AROS?
