Hello all.

I joined this board a while back:
https://ae.amigalife.org/index.php?topic=994.0

My plan at the time was to get AROS installed, and then to learn it.
Thanks to the advice from this board, I got AROS installed on an old Acer Aspire One ZG5.

The next step was for me to learn AROS, however a combination of work and family commitments stopped me. However, I now have the time to learn.

I have gotten AROS set up almost the way I want it, however there are few things I can’t get to the bottom of; and I have read through these forums and the AROS PDF manual with no luck - so I am hoping someone on this board can point me in the right direction.

My questions are:

- I have attached a monitor to the laptop by using a VGA cable (the laptop and monitor have VGA ports), and I was wondering if there is any way to change the screen brightness in AROS? The function key for doing this on the laptop only seems to work for the laptops screen.

- I noticed that there is a “Tools” menu in addition to the Wanderer, Window, and Icon menus, however it is disabled. Is there a way to enable this menu?

- I have copied a number of files over such as JPG, MP3, etc. How do you set up file associations so double clicking on the files in wanderer opens them in the relevant application?

- I have tried to connect to some VNC servers, but the client application on AROS crashes whenever I click connect. Is there a fix for this?

- Is there a command or utility for killing frozen processes?

- I have set up Janus UAE, however the full screen option always has a grey rectangle at the bottom of the screen, regardless of what display settings I use. Is there a way to get rid of the grey area?

Any advice would be welcome.

First you have to check if your hardware is supported on sys:tools/pcitool you can check at least the wifi and the network card at the limit if not compatible you can always change at least the wifi card anyway I have a laptop that gift and is fully supported except the network card

I am using Icaros desktop.

The wi-fi card in the laptop (Acer Aspire One ZG5) , works fine - as I have been web surfing with odessy no problem.

Using Wanderer? If you have file association problems you have to do as it wasthe workbench once i.e. use applications to view files, AROS ONE has file associations available

Yes - I want to set up file associations in wanderer in order to open the right application for JPG, MP3 when I double click on the file.
At the moment wanderer thinks the files are executables, and tries to run them.

To my knowledge AROS does not provide functionality to adjust the screen brightness.

afaik that part of Wanderer was not implemented.

See wikibook https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/User/Docs#Files files types and file association. Note that you can use any defined datatype from a(nother) distribution (so that might require some manual copy-paste). Don't forget to create a default icon (or copy them as well).

fwiw this has nothing to do with Wanderer or Dopus as desktop as the above mentioned method works for Amiga/AROS and thus for any desktop that you use. It is just that some users experience the dopus configuration method to be much simpler (to understand).

I have no idea though I do seem to recall there to be a similar issue in the past. Sorry I can't help you there atm.

No, not really unless you count a reboot as such.

Sorry, no idea whatsoever.

A couple of observations:

To kill frozen processes you could list all system tasks in Scout, select the frozen one than then try 'Remove'; a bit of a lottery though, system resources may not be returned and its possible it might crash AROS. If the only other option is reboot then worth a try though.

Grey area at the bottom of the Jnaus screen - check the screen mode/resolution set in the emulation via AmigaOS matches that set for the Janus screen.

As for VNC, I've been using it recently but the server, rather than the client. Is the server another AROS machine oir something else? I'll give the server/client combination between two AROS machines a test when I'm back home.

Cheers,
Nigel.

P.S. do you need all the features of VNC or just to send a screen? If the latter I have some very simple software that does the job. I've been using it for online classes, sending the screen from my AROS machine running my electronic whiteboard (very much work in progress but it might be worthy of upload one day) to a Linux box communicating to my students via Teams.

Hello all.
Many thanks for all the replies - very informative.
It looks like in many cases that I am expecting AROS to do things that it can't do yet.

With regards to VNC, I have enabled the server on AROS; and I can connect to AROS using VNC client on my windows laptop.
However, if I try to use the VNC client on AROS to connect to my raspberry pi, the crash happens.

OK, I've just tried VNC AROS to AROS and can confirm the client crashes. I'll post the error message over on the development thread.

As mentioned, do you need the full capabilities of VNC (i.e. passing over mouse movements) or is it just the screen sharing you need?

Cheers,
Nigel.

Hello.
Glad to see it crashes for other people as well!
Having the full use of VNC would be useful, however it is not essential for me.
Looks like we will have to wait for a bug fix.

For Sharing we have SMB2 which works very well, I can no longer do without it, I can share everything from my network with a simple Click !

One more thing..  :)

Is there a way to change digiclock from displaying the time in 24 hour format to 12 hour format?
