Hey all,

Aros Exec will go down, for good on 19.09.2023. Due to my new health situation and also income, i do no longer have the health or even money to keep this (and other) sites online.

I opened AE in march i think it was of 2004 and have been running this site for you guys ever since, but at some point, it has to stop and for me that is now.

I am also pulling out of Archives, which is another webpage i started. Here you can keep it up yourself, its not running on anything i control.

I will still keep the AROS Discord up, but if anyone wants to take it over, let me know.

That is my short and simple goodbye.

sorry to read that. All the best to you

That's really sad but health is the most important thing and that's what you should focus on. I hope that you recover as much as possible.

How much important is / was AE, but it's a just site and someone else of the community can hand it over and keep it running.

I hope that is possible if 4play is agreeable to it and so arrangements can be made     There is still lots of time and I'd like to keep this a public discussion   Just have to wait for 4play, when he's able, to check back in

Hello 4pLaY

sad to hear and I know how much work it is to keep something working so long. Not many sites have that kind of history these times.

And it is for sure not easy to take the step and close it down, but better to make a clear cut if it is necessary.

Wish you all the best and I hope to see you in some other forum or wherever in the future. Aros still wants you  ;).

Thanks for the countless hours of work!

Oli

If there is any interest in that, I can offer to host AROS Exec on the MorphZone server.

It would be good to copy the existing database in some place, and being accessible even in read-only mode.
We already lost the old aros-exec with an incredible knowledge base and now it's again same, unfortunately.

That's the downside of all those forums. Old amiga newsgroups are still accessible, forum content gets lost most of the time when the forum dies.

Archive is a good way to start. I can see my oldest 90's websites :)

Well, I had offered to help rescuing the old AROS Exec as well.

But some people prefer to watch things burn, I suppose.

That would be the best option

It is not about watching anything burn, but your offer solves half the problem. Who is going to do the work of moving the site and setting it up? So far, not a single person has offered to take on the work of actually running and keeping it maintained.

Unfortunately I'm not a sysadmin, so I can't help here.
I can help with coding or quality assurance. And give some money, if needed, as I did in the past.

@4pLaY: do you think that both amigalife and the old aros-exec could be dumped & moved to another site?

First, the main thing immediately would be money to keep it hosted. As for "maintaining" and moderating, give some users privileges to moderate. Well, good people. As for full admin status, that could take a little longer but maybe someone takes over. The important part is transferring the ownership of the accounts with any hosting service. There is no particular reason to actually shut down. If the forum's web software is robust, it should be able to stay operational 24/7 for considerable number of months as long as the hosting bills are paid for.

It's not like it is actually a fulltime job. Especially if the community self-moderate itself well by mere good behavior. Moderators can be appointed to keep the site clean of bot posts and such and even handle the day to day issues of resolving dramas that flares up every so often. People haven't offered to move the site and migrate it over for the following reasons: A) It might not be necessary to actually do that. B) Those are details to resolve after initial dialogue and obtaining the details of what needs to be done.

In general, it should not be that much of a problem to transfer account ownership with the hosting platforms regarding any sort of billing related matters. Even a general partnership group under some sort of organizational name operated by the community could be formed and funding be facilitated by the community for the community and then its obviously there may be additional persons appointed with admin level access to the forum and whatever else. Is it really necessary to migrate to a different web and domain hosting services?

@Wildstar: people already moved on another site, which has already a sysadmin which is taking care of it.
IMO it should be enough to dump and database of this site and the old AROS-Exec, giving the possibility to access in read-only mode to the threads & comments, because it's a huge knowledge base.
The rest can be continued on the new site.
However the point is always the same: who could do that dump?
