I wanted to briefly say a few words from my experience of installing ICAROS just in case anyone else is in the same situation (or using a gigabyte z77 motherboard).
After I realized that my sata controller should be set to ahci and not ide all went rather well with a few exceptions (I do not have IDE headers on my mother board). My black screen/failed installation was because of this, not the graphics cards i used (nv7950 and 460).
But I note (after purchasing a dvdr) that because of the beta ahci driver that I have to use, only icaros lite could be installed and not the full version as the full version would fault near the end whilst unzipping the programs.
Not having a dvdr last month I first tried the pendrive version of icaros lite. After stripping and dd on linux it worked well with an exception possibly due to the need to take out and reinsert the pendrive. I noticed that if linux (I think it was ext 4 file system) was on the drive to be used it would fail to continue the installation at this point. The same was true for using the pendrive to reinstall icaros after trying another aros distro. It appears to stop the installation, sees a distro already on the drive and stops installation in favour of loading what is already on the proposed installation drive. So, a reformat of the installation drive was needed before I could continue to a successful reinstall.
This was just my experience. But if this happens to you.. perhaps you are in the same situation that I was.
Some last thoughts..
Watch out for intel pci double port ethernet controllers that are named as pro 100 (and purchased from ebay) they still use the incompatible intel pro 1000 chip
Modern (or at least more modern) HD audio works well.
Vesa drivers work very well, so if your card isn't supported you should still be able to have an enjoyable experience!
...and read the manual!!
And yes, installing AROS is definitely worth it for a excellent Amiga experience using more modern hardware (with caveats) or utilizing redundant hardware.
No Amiga is faster than an AmigaOS (read AROS) on a pc, and it's totally free!!
