Drive to install GRUB's bootblock on

Hi,

Thought I'd have a play around with AROS on an old Dell laptop.

Booted from DVD into AROS and kicked off the install, created a partition and rebooted. After a couple of installer screens I get this:



I don't know what I should be entering for Device or Unit.

The machine has CloudReady (Chrome OS free version) running on it, not Windows. I was hoping to have it as dual boot.

I tried Googling and found some Icarus install guides, but none of them have this screen.

The field "Device" normally autofilled with the correct harddrive. If it's empty, there is no point found to install grub. In this case, you have to type in "[Type of connection to harddrive].device" - normally it's "ata.device".
Before typing in, check, what type of harddrive connection your Dell have. To see this, go "AROS Live CD" --> "Tools" --> "HDToolBox". The white fonted options are harddrives, bounded over this connectiontype. Type in the options name into the field "Device", if it's not "ata.device".

Originally I use the option to use Free Space and it said it created the partition.  Selecting use AROS partition takes me to the screen in my original post above. This time I added 'ata'device' and clicked proceed but I got this error:


Booting back into Cloud Ready it isn't showing any new partitions, but I'm not sure if it should?



Just to try it over I booted back into AROS live, and tried using the Use free space option again, but it gives this error now:



Should I try anything else or is AROS not liking the fact Cloud Ready is installed?

On the first /second picture, you can see, that AROS using AHCI. For installing AROS on your computer, you need to switch the Button "Type" from "IDE" to "AHCI/SATA" on the partition creating window and replace "ata.device" to "ahci.device" on the field "Device" on the GRUB configuration window. After that, AROS installer should start installing.

Thanks, but seeing as your video doesn't encounter the same error nor cover the solution, it is sadly of no use what so ever...

Many thanks. Thought I'd give it another go. But still getting essentially the same results.

I tried with Unit of 0 and 1 but got the same result each time.

Click Type then select Partitions, although this greys the other options out, so not sure if I needed to do this.




The Device field is still blank, so I typed this in, again I tried with Unit of 0 and 1:

From your screenshots I don't see the first "important" operation to do which is to check "Wipe Disk" (as shown in my video) choose your device and proceed, only after that you have to do the installation,

Without the "Wipe Disk" you will never be able to install AROS properly, also you have taken care to delete the Windows/Linux bootloader on hardisk, in many cases especially on pendrivers it is indispensable !

With Option "Use existing AROS partitions (on any drive)", you saying to the installer: "Look for the correct partition by your own". So you do not need to say, where it's located - so the other options become greyed out.

Switching between Unit "0" and "1" has effected nothing, because you saying with "1", that GRUB has to be installed on another drive.
Just short: Drives in AROS are listed as numbers ("0", "1", "2", "3" and so on) , like in Windows letters ("A", "B", "C", "D" and so on). If you saying your first drive, you would say in Windows "C", in AROS "0". If you saying your second drive, you would say in Windows "D", in AROS "1". If you saying your USB-Stick as mass storage, you say in Windows "E", in AROS "2".

Back to point:
Could you check, which partition type your drive have? AROS/Icaros cannot use "GUID Partition Table" (GPT), so it muss run on "Master Boot Record" (MBR). If you have GPT on your drive, you will have to wipe full disk (and delete CloudReady). Opening HDToolBox again and double click the white field. When double clicked, you should see your drive. Select your drive to see on the left side your partition table.
