Is Icaros open source?

The closest thing I find to an answer is this (https://ae.amigalife.org/index.php?topic=814.0;prev_next=prev#new):

“You would also have to take a good look at the Icaros Desktop license in order to make sure that it is allowed for you to make modifications (not talking about distribution there).
To make it more clear: there is no Icaros source-code. Everything you see in Icaros is build on top of AROS.”

To be honest, that is not a clear answer. It should be yes or no, and this seems like double talk. Many Linux distros are built on other distros (especially Ubuntu), and those distros are open source - and scripts are code . But I don’t find the Icaros repository anywhere. So “You would also have to take a good look at the Icaros Desktop license”, all I can answer to that is “How - where is the license?”

I’m a retired software developer. This project looks like fun. I’d like to contribute. But only if this is open source. And I can’t find a clear answer.

Icaros is a combination of 3 elements:

1) Base AROS system (~15% of Icaros)
2) 3rd party developed software (~80% of Icaros)
3) Specific Icaros configuration files and scripts (~5% of Icaros)

For 1), the answer is clear. It is open sourced, mostly via APL license and hosted here: https://github.com/deadw00d/AROS/tree/alt-abiv0. You can contact me for details.
For 2), most of programs are open sourced. It's case by case and I'm sure if you see a program you want to contribute to, someone here will be able to guide you to the author
For 3), there is no public repository and best is to contact user @paolone (https://ae.amigalife.org/index.php?action=profile;u=14) for more details

For 3) they are "Amen source", meaning that I pray a lot when I write those script, and for some reason they finally work.

They are fully readable, and I mostly write them for the fun of writing them: proper implementation would require some high level language knowledge I haven't, so feel free to take inspiration from them, although I am sure anyone would come with a better solution for most of the tasks they perform.

For your question, Icaros is part open source, part not. AROS IS NOT LINUX, there's less politic involved in code development here: this community appreciates open source but can also live with closed applications without getting mad.

Here you are not on Linux, we are a family, if you want to develop software we will all be happy to include it in our distributions, any suggestion is welcome, even I am retired 69 years old !

Personal opinion is since the current ABIv0 is essentially a port of ABIv1 to get the broadest reach you could simply work in the main AROS branch. https://github.com/aros-development-team

Thank you all - I get it. I have been using FreeBSD, it has similar licensing.  I prefer open source on github, so I can read it on my tablet while sitting on the sofa  :) but this works too.

The vast majority of the software in Icaros is open source, though there are a few closed-source ones like Cinnamon Writer. In the AROS/Amiga world, we generally aren't too miffed about applications being closed source, except when you have to port them to other architectures or ABIs.

Just do like I did with Finalwriter spend 1000's of dollars and you can port to wherever you want.   :o
