I do not know if mplayer uses graphic acceleration for videos, there are still more powerful compatible cards but some of them do not display the high resolution that the screen makes available I currently to not strain my eyes use a resolution 1024x768

Since AFAIK there's no overlay support for AROS, there's little chance any software could use hardware acceleration for videos, MPlayer included.

It looks like it is as you say, MPlayer is not GPU accelerated :(

I installed an Nvidia GeForce G210 and while I got much better performance at Super Tux Kart 0.6.2a (available at http://archives.aros-exec.org/) I did not get any improvement in 1080p video. So, it looks like the GPU does not help with video.

Is there any OpenGL based video player available for AROS/Icaros Desktop Live?

no unfortunately :-\ But maybe you can create a player that makes use of acceleration

A workaround I found for playing 720p and 1080p video on AROS/Icaros Desktop Live with MPlayer on my machine is to use mp4 files instead of mkv x254 files.

I used the VLC media player on another computer to convert the video using the following steps:
  • From VLC's main menu, select Media > Convert / Save
  • then in the "Open Media" window click the Add button,
  • In the newly opened file selection window:
    • browse to the location of the mkv file you want to convert and select it.
  • Click on the Convert/Save button
  • in the newly opened "Convert" window:
    • Select the Profile "Video for MPEG4 1080p TV/device" for 1080p or the "Video for MPEG4 720p TV/device".
    • In the Destination form field, click the Browse button.
      • Browse to the location you want to save the converted file and enter a new name for this file.
  • Click the Start Button.
  • Wait for the conversion to finish. (The progress bar, which regularly shows the playback time now acts as a progress bar for the conversion, wait for it to be filled)

Then you can transfer the file with a USB memory stick to the AROS/Icaros Desktop Live computer.

The video and audio gets de-synced with MPlayer, especially if I move the mouse while the video is playing. Is this a regular issue with MPlayer, or am I doing something wrong ?

I tried various videos in different formats and I have concluded that the issue is that the hardware (given that only one core is used, and no GPU is used) is too slow.

Except for x265, which is not supported by MPlayer, the rest played. The 1080p videos were too much and the video and audio desynchronized very fast and the motion was very bad.
Lower resolution videos in 720p desynchronized in action packed scenes, but gradually recovered, unfortunately not very pleasant to look at.
Even lower resolution videos played fine.

I think I may look for a better new and more modern motherboard and a CPU with more single-core performance to build a proper Icaros Desktop Live system.

I also realized that the CMOS battery is now dead, I wonder if any of the USB issues I faced earlier were because of the dying battery. I will replace it soon, and I will let you know.

Then I will close this post as it is starting to get off-topic.  :)
