Title: Hello from South Wales
Post by: gkb on September 04, 2022, 04:12:10 PM
Hello all.

I am a new joiner to this website, so I thought I would introduce myself.

To give my background story, I owned an Amiga 500 through the nineties — and to this day it is still my favorite ever computer. As a kid growing up in the South Wales Valleys, the summers were great as you had the countryside to explore; but the viciously cold winters meant you had two options — play rugby or hang around street corners. Neither of these options appealed to me, so getting an Amiga gave me a third option.

I had to decommission it when I went to university, as the labs ran IBM-PCs with Windows NT (showing my age now!) ; so I had to have an IBM-PC at home to run the same software the labs had. So — I bought the parts, built the PC and installed Windows 95 oh it. Oh dear. Workbench on my Amiga 500 with the 1 MB RAM expansion and hard drive was much more responsive, stable - and had smoother multitasking.

I tolerated Microsoft’s finest for my first year, but when I got to my second year two of the lecturers introduced me to Linux. It looked promising (this was 1998); so after a weekend involving 2 Linux CD’s, 4 boot floppies and a lot of swearing I had a dual boot Linux/Windows PC. I quickly found myself spending most of my time in Linux, and only using Windows for gaming — Quake, Carmageddon, etc.

I have been using Linux as my daily driver for many years, but the recent explosion in retro computing and the corresponding resurgence in the Amiga scene has made me want to revisit my misspent youth. I have been researching the various Amiga hardware platforms that can be bought now, and they are all either too expensive or are currently not available.

My research has found one cost effective and practical way to get an Amiga on my desk again; and that is to buy an old Acer Aspire ZG5 and install AROS One on to it. I have purchased a reconditioned ZG5 on ebay, and AROS One is on a USB stick waiting for its arrival.

I need a big indoors project to get me through the winter — and mastering AROS One is it.

With this in mind, expect a lot of questions from me!

Gavin.

Cio Gavin and welcome to the forum, I'm glad you enjoyed my Distribution AROS One, I own almost all Amiga models that I haven't used for 30 years, some time ago I had also created a Distribution OS 3.9 BB4 called AfA One.

AROS One is up to date and soon there will be a new version, please report me any anomalies you find on AROS One !

On Acer Aspire One ZG5 the game starts and gets to the menu, then while the game loads it reboots, probably you need to have a Video Card supported by the Game.

Thank you all for the welcomes.

I had a lot of trouble getting an installation USB key set up, as Icaros desktop would hang with a "waiting for boot medium" message, and Aspire OS would crash with a "not enough memory" error.

AROS One seems to have burned to USB correctly; and it looks like the trick to it is to:

- Install qemu on a linux host.
- Insert the USB key into the host.
- Attach the USB key to the qemu session.
- Boot the ISO file in qemu (as root user!)
- Run the install AROS command. The install has to be run once to create the partitions on the USB key, reboot the virtual machine, and then run it again to copy the data over.

I have tested this on a borrowed laptop that is an older Windows 7 machine - so close to the ZG5 hopefully; and the USB key boots just fine.

Glad to have gotten over this hurdle; as I spent a whole day:

- Fiddling with burning ISO files to CD, and creating the USB key via the booted CD.
- Trying different virtual machines, and tinkering with the settings.
- Using the linux dd command to write the ISO to USB.

Thought I would post the procedure that worked, as it might save someone else a day of annoyance!

gkb the procedure is correct, I however run it on VM (VMware), to Clone and Burn the USB image, on Windows I use Rufus, one of the best software for this kind of operation, the developer was an old Amiga 500 user.

Other great software to burn the ISO Image is "Etcher", anyway on AROS One, for cghi using Windows there are instructions on how to create a Pendruve Live with VMWare.

I am not a Windows Fan, but in the early 90's for work I had to use Windows, then thanks to the Amiga experience I became a Windows expert as well, then someone thought to exploit me in the Company, and I managed 2 Servers and hundreds of PCs and users in local network and many business software.

Now I am in Retirement I am 68 years old but always passionate about computing, at the moment I carry on only the project AROS One x86 and AROS One 68k, to be honest I never liked Linux, to each his own taste ;)

AROS One is everyone's and everyone can collaborate, if you create something I will be happy to put it on AROS One

Amiwell - Thanks for that point - I have to admit that I did not try that.

I got AROS One booting off USB at the end of a long and frustrating day, and since my blood pressure was high enough by then I stopped working - as I had won the battle and got a booting USB key on my desk.

When the laptop arrives I will attempt the next challenge of getting AROS One installed. Since it has quite a large hard drive, and is coming with Windows 7 ; I am going to attempt to set up a dual boot between Windows and AROS, as this will make the laptop a one stop retro machine - Windows for all the games such as Quake, etc ; and AROS for all my Amiga needs. I might post my progress on this thread.

I have never liked Windows - I have found that every release of it has some huge flaw that makes it a pain to use.

Don't get me started on Apple!

Linux when I first started was very difficult to get installed and set up, but I persisted with it - and I have a good level of knowledge now.  The thing with Linux then and now is that when you get the install and setup done it gives you trouble free computing for years. Linux is very easy to install now - just download an ISO,. burn it to USB, boot the USB key and click through the wizard. Quite a change from when I tried to install version 0.98!

gkb, installing AROS One from a Pendrive is convenient is fast, DVDs are too slow and in many cases errors are generated on some files.

However, there is no need to create the USB image, on my site, there is already the ISO image for USB devices

Yes as you say Windows is complicated, but in my opinion it is simpler than Linux, for me Windows doesn't have many secrets, Linux on the other hand I don't like it because of too many permissions in some unnecessary circumstances, the be careful when writing commands because of the case sensitive and then the many incompatibilities between the various Distros, which among other things are too many, in my opinion they should have been fewer and compatible with each other.

DualBoot Win/AROS One is super easy, if you can use it there is a comprehensive video of mine, if you need just ask, maybe open a dedicated thread or post here:

Hello again.

The ZG5 has still not arrived (thanks a lot Royal Mail!) , so while I am waiting I am putting together a checklist for things to do - stuff like buy new battery, factory reset the Windows 7 install that comes with it, etc.

I have been thinking about the step of partitioning the 120 GB hard drive up, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a partition size for AROS One?

I plan to have three partitions in total:
- Windows 7
- AROS One System - DH0
- AROS One Data - DH1

Any recommendations of sizes would be welcome.

Gavin.

maybe 80 Gb for Windows and 40 for aros i heve two partition on aros the system occupy 2 Gb and work 12 Gb in this partition i have many games installed

@gkb

If you want to create two partitions for AROS, you don't need to create them first with other tools, it only takes one

The 2 AROS partitions you can make them easily and quickly with InstallAROS, important to follow the correct procedure, basically DH1 should be created automatically from InstallAROS menu, from GUI you can choose Size and Filesystem, watch my attached video

Title: Re: Hello from South Wales
Post by: gkb on September 07, 2022, 08:54:42 AM
Sounds good.

80GB for Windows 7 should be enough.
I have ISO files of all the CD's of games I want to play - I have dug out an unused 4GB SD card from a drawer, so I can use that to copy the ISO files to Windows 7, mount the ISO files with a virtual CD mounter, and install the games.
I will format that card to FAT32, as from what I can tell, AROS only has read support for NTFS, and it might be handy to have read/write access from Windows 7 and AROS.
The ZG5 has an SD card slot, so might as well make use of it.
I am guessing that if I shrink the Windows 7 partition after I factory reset it, AROS will install to the unused space on the disk and leave Windows 7 alone.
I am also guessing that the grub installation performed by AROS will see the Windows 7 installation, and add that as a boot option.

No NTFS also works for writing, at the moment I have not encountered any problems but use it with caution.
For Activate NFS you have to copy to "L" the Handler located in the "Storage" Folder, after copying it rename it "ntfs-handler"

Attention on "Z5" SD is not bootable ! also AROS doesn't support SD, you can manage SD through an SD/USB Adapter
Title: Re: Hello from South Wales
Post by: gkb on September 07, 2022, 10:01:50 AM
Hmmm - ok.

Change of plan then.

I will just use the SD card to copy data to Windows 7.
Since Windows 7 has been out of support for quite some time there will be a lot of un-patched security holes - so keeping it offline is probably the best idea.
It will only have one job - and that is to run games, and since all the games I plan to run don't need a network connection this will work fine.

AROS will be connected to the outside world.
I have a raspberry pi running as a samba file server/mp3 file upnp streamer, so I will see if there is a way to mount the samba shares in AROS and copy data to and from AROS that way.
This will get around the lack of SD card support.
If AROS can't mount samba shares I will use a USB key instead.

I use ntfs3g to read the NTFS partitions, just change the automotun-config file that is in /L and replace the ntfs-handler string with ntfs3g-handler add the filesysbox.library in /libs and ntfs3g-handler in /L

http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/driver/filesystem/ntfs3g-53.4.i386-aros.lha
http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/library/misc/filesysbox.i386-aros.lha

PS.There is an unsolved bug for samba on aros

@Salvo
on AROS One you don't need to add anything it's all updated and preset, as mentioned just need to copy ntfs3g-handler and rename.

@gkb
There are many ways to exchange data, in addition to Pendrives, External Hard Disks and CD/DVD, as mentioned even SDs you can use as long as you have a small adapter SD/USB (https://www.prezzoforte.it/images/webp/Kingston_MLPMR2_256GB_253609_0.webp)

RDesktop should also work well for data exchange with the PC.

Another tip to speed up Z5 ' is to install AROS on External USB HD, this way you can try and use AROS One also on other PCs.

If you use an external USB HD, you can create partitions in FAT 32 to share with any other Operating System.

@gkb

Just to say your ZG5's SD card slot might work if t's wired up internally as a USB device - that's the case for my Samsung n130 and eee PC 4G. However, as noted some don't (as is the case for my HP  Compaq laptop), but it's worth a try to see if it is recognised by AROS once the machine is in your hands.

Cheers,
Nigel.

P.S. hope you have fun with AROS  :D

Thank you all for the feedback.

I will insert the SD card when AROS is installed and hope for the best.
That is If the ZG5 ever gets here - ebay says it has been dispatched, so it is sat in a Royal Mail depot somewhere - and they have just voted to go on strike again.  >:(

If SD and Samba don't work I can use a USB key for data transfer - I found an old 4GB one last night.

No my procedure is correct, on AROS One x86 there are 3 versions do NTFS-Hndler in Storage, you have to choose the most updated one, as you see from the screenshot I mounted ONE "1000 GB" HD in NTFS, in the next version I will delete the other versions left there only for eventual Tests.

You can also use larger USB keys, they work well, I don't know if my English was understood, as mentioned an external USB HD is the best choice because it is faster, also if you also have a FAT32/NTFS partition you can also share it between AROS and other OS. Also as mentioned also the installation on external HD is much faster besides you can also use it on other Computers.

NTFS seems to work fine with HDs but it doesn't work with Pendrives, at least on the ones cho I tested, could anyone confirm this?

Well - It has arrived!

The battery is as dead as a stone - Windows 7 does not even recognize there is a battery connected. It looks like I can get a replacement battery for about £20, so I am thinking about getting one. I guess that I can just clip this new battery in and get it charged.

First impressions of the hardware are good - There are no scratches or dents anywhere. The screen does not have a mark on it, and is nice and clear. It is smaller than I expected, but this makes it nice and portable (just need a new battery). I like the keyboard a lot - it is compact, but very nice to type on. Downsides are - the small screen; however since there is a VGA output on the side I think I will get a VGA to HDMI adapter so I can connect to a monitor. I have a spare USB keyboard and mouse, so when at home it will be used a psedo desktop tower machine. The other minus is the touchpad - far too small, and the buttons being placed on either side makes it horrible to use. I will be using a USB mouse instead.

The seller has placed a clean install of Windows 7 on it, so all I need to do is shrink its partition to make room for AROS. I will then run some diagnostic tools such as speedfan and GSmartControl on it to give the hardware a thorough test. Keen to get AROS installed, but I want to do the boring groundwork first.

For a laptop built in 2008, and paying £40 for it - I think I have a bargain.  :)

It's actually very nice, AROS One x86 It's actually very nice, I too have an Acer Aspire One Z5, mine has the battery that works but only for a few minutes (if I freeze it in the fridge for a few days) it lasts a few minutes longer :)

The only problem is on my internal HD which is "dead" it is not even detected by the operating system, replacing the HD seems to be not easy, it seems to be soldered.

Thanks all.
I have run the diagnostics - speedfan show that the internal temperature stays low when left on for a few hours; so no need to open the unit and clean it.
GSmartControl reports that the hard drive is "old age". This is no surprise for a 2008 laptop; however the read/write tests on the disk report no errors. I will use the HDD and hope for the best. If it fails, it is possible to get SSD drives that fit the unit.
Have shrunk the Windows 7 partition down using it's disk manager and taken a full disk backup with clonezilla. If the AROS install goes wrong, I have a saved state to roll back to.

Remember that the partition you left for AROS is "RAW" no initialization and no formatting, if you do this InstallAROS will see only that partition and will not touch the others, also in the FRUB Aros will add Win7 :)
Title: Re: Hello from South Wales

Just install Windows first after aros loads and you start the Installer and choose the "Only Use Free Space" option in the end you will find the Windows item on Grub

No Salvo is good only if you install Windows first.
If on the other hand the hardisk already has Windows installed is you have to create a new partition or shrink the partition or use an existing one already formatted, if not do as described it also destroys the Windows partition !

---- Italiano -----

No Salvo va bene solo se installi prima Windows
Se invece l'hardisk ha già Windows installato è devi creare una nuova partizione o restringere la partizione o usare una esistente già formattata, se no fai quanto descritto distrugge anche la partizione Windows !

Ok - So at the moment I have shrunk the Windows 7 partition, so there is 78GB of unallocated space on the drive.
Do I need to create partitions with a file system to install AROS onto before booting the USB and installing, or will AROS create the partitions and create the file system during the USB booted install procedure?
Title: Re: Hello from South Wales
Post by: AMIGASYSTEM on September 12, 2022, 07:39:28 AM
As said what you need to verify, is that the free 78GB space must be "RAW" no initialization and no formatting.

Clearly InstallAROS will take the whole partition of "78GB" where during installation you can leave all "78GB" for DH0, or split it in two creating DH1 as well, see my attached video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXG7u3uPpvo

If, on the other hand, you still want to subdivide "78GB" and didicate a third partition to AROS, you will still have to leave one of these "RAW" partitions so that AROS will recognize it as the only available disk,

This is known problem on AROS when installing on two partitions, on AROS One v1.8 I corrected the problem, what version of AROS One do you have installed.

You basically have the assign by default when installing everything on DH0.

For Wifi I'll make you an exaustive screenshot created on Z5, with all the necessary options :)

It is better to install AROS One v1.8, it will be much faster than v1.7, I deleted thousands of small images that were not needed.

AROS One v1.8 includes many updates, it pays off.

To install AROS One v1.8 without destroying everything, as soon as you start AROS One, format the two partitions and then reboot the system with the ISO and do the same installation prodeura

From this screenshot you can see how easy it is to configure Wifi on AROS, it's like being on Amiga, no Script, no Shell ;)

At the moment if you are using Aros One v1.7, go to user-startup and change all Assign necessary from SYS:EXTRAS to DH1:EXTRAS, but as said it is better to install AROS One 1.8 which has many updates

As you can see my Z5 is coonected on the Net with AmiTube

A few things you might try (btw, I'm assuning here you're using atheros5000.device, the SSID and passphrase are set up via the wireless networks tab and the laptop connects via OK with Windows meaning no hardware issues):

I hope something here helps,

The gkb user is using  Acer Aspire One Z5 so no script is needed , Windows is not connected in any way with AROS, practically it is as if it does not exist.

To connect to the Acer Aspire One Z5 Network (Wifi or LAN), you can do it directly from Network Prefs also from a PendriveLive, with AROS One you can practically connect to the Net by even a Live DVD.

Ther Windows comment was simply about doing an independent (of AROS) test of the hardware (no point chasing software or configuration problems is it's a faulty wi-fi card).

Yes, the script shouldn't be needed, but equally with my old USB wi-fi dongle that should have worked from boot but didn't, and always needed this 'start-stop-restart' approach via the script to get it working. Just a suggestion. something to try if nothing else works.

Cheers,

Yes with the USB Wi-Fi dongles this happens, it happened to me too, with the built-in Wifi/LAN Cards you should not need the script, your script still remains a second chance should you need it.

Back again.

I have updated to 1.8 with no problems.

I have been trying to get the wi-fi working.
The wi-fi works fine if I boot into Windows 7, so the hardware is sound.
in AROS, I have gone into network, set the card to atheros5000 , and I have tried DHCP and manually configuring the IP addreses.
For each instance, when I press save in network, a wireless manager icon appears on the desktop.
Clicking this icon lists all the wi-fi networks, including mine.
However, when I type in the password and click connect - nothing happens - the wi-fi list dialog box just stays there refreshing itself.
My wi-fi is a bt hub with WPA2.

The other thing I noticed is that there is a small trapdoor on the underside of the laptop, and opening this seems to show some kind of card that has been installed - I am wondering if this is some kind of 3G modem. Could this interfere with the wi-fi?

Don't use a static IP, leave everything in Automatic, if the icon appears and the Available Networks means the Card is working, follow and use my config shown in the screenshot.

After saving do a reboot and make sure you put the tick on "Start Networking ...."

Also make sure the password is correct, copy to a text file and do a Copy-Paste, on Z5 alternative key F12+C (Copy) / F12+V (Paste).

If the kind of 3G modem doesn't interfere on Win7 it shouldn't on AROS either, for WPA2 support, I also have a WPA2 Network and Z5 with AROS works fine.

Is it strange what model is your Acer ZG5?

Help!

Strange, have you verified the saved password if it is correct, verify it from the file "Wireless.prefs"

The" Wireless.prefs" file is located in the path "Prefs\Env-Archive\SYS\Wireless.prefs

Inside you will find this:
Code: [Select]
network={
ssid="network name"
psk="xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
scan_ssid=1
}

@gkb

Do try starting the wi-fi manually with 'c:wirelessmanager atheros5000.device verbose' from the shell; the output from this could shed some light on the probem. Of course if you add '> ram:log' at the end the output will be piped to the 'log' file for detailed inspection.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Hello all.
I am going to have to apologize to you all!

It turns out that the wi-fi was working fine.
I opened the odessy web browser to try to see if I could get any hints about the connection not working - and google popped up.
It looks like I had the right settings in networking, but the wireless connection manager GUI implies that you have to type in the router password and hit connect. It turns out that you do not need to do this, the connection manager can just be ignored.

Anyway - I am posting to you all via the medium of AROS!

Thanks to you all for your advice.

I spent most of last night playing around to learn the OS - and I have to say I am impressed.
It's an Amiga - in 2022!
AROS is very fast and snappy to use - this 2008 ZG5 will run rings around my 2 year old Windows 11 i4 laptop.
The nostalgia is great as well - Directory opus, There is a boing ball demo, etc.

It looks like the major technical hurdles have been solved - and now I can configure the OS and install some applications.

I have a few queries though:
- I tried adding a samba share to the mounted shares in networking, but this caused a crash. I tried to take the share details back out, but they re-appear when I reboot. Is there a config file I can edit to get rid of the samba share I input?
- Is there a way to change the screen brightness?
- Is there a way to disable the touchpad. I am using a USB mouse, as the touchpad is unusable.

I am happy that on your Z5 everything works perfectly on AROS One v1.8.

I use a Wireless Mouse, but the Touchpad works fine for me. Regarding Samba it seems it needs to be updated, here on forums this problem was mentioned.

For brightness you have to use the Fn + Keys Sun, the FN key is below left next to CTRL and the 2 Sun keys are below right

RDesktop works well although the free AROS version is limited and only works if you connect to WinXP.

For swapping Files if you activate NTFS you should see the Win7 data you have on the other partition, or use a PenDrive or External HD USB.

It seems as though the network connectivity works fine with the crash causing samba share set - it is not set to active, so I will leave it alone; as it is not causing a problem.
I am using a USB key to transfer data over - works just fine.
For everyone's information - I inserted a SD card, but it is not recognized.

It looks like Fn+F7 disables the touchpad, so problem solved there.

Next job - get all the applications I need installed.

Yes SD Card is not supported, it works if you use SD/USB adapter instead :)

I confirm Fn+F7 disables the touchpad !

Regarding Apps to install, on AROS One if you go to Extras you will find almost all existing "updated" Apps for AROS !

Find more software at http://archives.aros-exec.org/

Ok, so I have been putting together a list of all the applications I want to use.

I have been through all the applications AROS has out of the box, and it looks like the best apps are as follows:

Web Browsing - Oddessy web browser
Playing Music (MP3 files) - Mplayer
Watching Films (MP4, AVI files, etc) - Mplayer
Image viewing - Multiview
File management - Directory Opus

These applications all work well - impressive!

I cant seem to find applications to do the following jobs in AROS or online - can anyone reccomend software to do the following:

RSS Feed viewer
Viewing/Editing documents (Libre office ODT format, Microsoft word, etc)
Viewing ebook files (*.epub)
SSH Client
Xmpp chat client
Matrix chat client
Full disk backup to external hard drive
Vista landscape generator

Any pointers would be welcome!

Unfortunately, the Applications you mentioned do not exist on AROS !

For the Backup Disk try these:

http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/utility/shell/backupcopy_v1.0.i386-aros.tar.gz

http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/utility/archive/backup.lha

For landscape generator:

http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/graphics/raytrace/mountainview.tar.gz

On AROS One i have avoided including Applications that do not work well or are obsolete, the programs mentioned above are an example.

Thanks - I will give those apps a spin.
So - it looks like I have taken the installation of AROS, and the usage of AROS applications as far as I can take it.

AROS as it stands reminds me of Linux versions 0.x and 1.x in the 90s - tricky to install, patchy hardware support, and missing a few key applications.
Having said that, AROS has impressed me - it is fast, stable, and great fun to use.
I will be sticking around for the long term - I am confident as time passes things like hardware support and application availability will improve.
I think AROS is on the same path as Linux - and Linux today supports all hardware, installs in 30 mins, and has tens of thousands of applications.

I have copied all my ADF and Amiga ROM files to the ZG5, so now Janus-UAE is up and running - now all the games I copied from my Amiga to PC (via a read floppy, send down a serial cable, then write to an ADF file on the PC program) - now run on AROS.
Great stuff.

You can find some online resources for example to convert your office files, audio, video etc ..., for chat you can use the bitlbee(www.bitlbee.org)service with Wookiechat even if it is a classic client, for the backup you can save system files and yours Documents on a another partition or on cloud I use adrive.com that is accessible with Odyssey, Enjoy whit aros!

On AROS One x86 in the Emulators /AMIGA folder is WHD_MENU (see screenshot), a nice GUI preconfigured to run Amiga WHDLoad games, for good compatibility use Kixckstart 3.1.

In this video you can see how WHD_MENU works on AROS One

Thanks for the tips all.

For a backup solution, since I have split the partitions between the OS (DH0) , and all my files (DH1) ; I am going to take the simple approach of using directory opus to lha archive all the files on DH1 onto a USB I have spare. I just need to remember to update the backup every now and again.

I can't seem to find any rsync type tools anywhere, so I will take the more time consuming approach of backing up everything every time.

The other thing is that hopefully when it comes to upgrading AROS to version 1.9, I can just overwrite DH0 and all my files will still be there on DH1 when I boot up the upgraded OS.

On AROS One 1.9 at the moment there are not some updates on the system files, only a few files, system icons change, by default there will be the new White drawer icons, you can still install the classic Blue icons through special installer.

For those who do not want to reinstall from scratch I will create special installer updates that include only the updates.

Tp synchronise folders have a look at BackupCopy - it has options to mirror and synchronsie from source to destination. Yes it is just command line; one of thse days I'll get around to finishing the GUI for it...

Cheers,
Nigel.

Ok, so one more thing.  :D

I was wondering if there was any way to see how full the disks are?

I am missing the old Full/Empty gauge that used to appear on the left side of the window when you opened a disk icon.

Can I put this in as a feature request? ;D

From icon information you can know the space used and the space left.
If you enable the bottom bar in the window you can also know number of folders and files in the window and space occupied

I attach screenshot showing the above

Hello all - again.

Hope you all don't mind me bringing an old thread back, but I have made some progress on connecting the laptop I use for AROS (an Acer Aspire One ZG5) to a monitor.

I tried a VGA to HDMI adaptor, and this did not work.

I recently got hold of a standard VGA cable, and I have a monitor that has VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs.

Plugging a VGA cable in to the laptop and monitor gives a picture on the monitor when AROS is booted.

The only limit seems to be that the "Normal" option has to be picked in the boot menu, which gives a square picture on the rectangular monitor - so two black areas to the left and right of the picture.

Any other option in the boot menu will give a rectangular picture, but there is a shimmering effect to the picture with these options - which makes AROS unusable as the picture would cause instant eye strain!

So - don't use a VGA to HDMI adaptor - use an old VGA cable.

I thought this might help someone else, so I wanted to post my findings.
