I am just fiffling around with Scalos and managed to get it working on Aros 68k. Scalos is available on contrib.
looks nice and is more sophisticated than 3.1 and Wanderer
Screenshot below
more informations about it:
http://scalos.noname.fr/
the interesting part (next to noone used it up to now for a distribution) it is available for aros so hopefully it will also be available on linux as alternative to wanderer.
Features:
100% Workbench replacement - All functions work like the original Workbench ones
Undo and Redo for most window and icon operation
64bit arithmetic - Correctly recognises harddisks over 4GB
Fully multitasking - Every window has its own task. While loading icons, any window function (e.g. Drag&Drop) is available
Icon imagetypes - All types are supported such as backfill or complement. Configurable surrounding iconborder
Icon datatype system - NewIcon datatype included. Icon support also visually highlights files which are soft-links in the file system.
Icon dragging is more stable - And far less flickery on graphics cards. Whilst dragging, icons are displayed with text and they become transparent over anything where they can be dropped! MUI-alike transparency on low colour screens. Real transparency if running at 15-bit or greater.
Cybergraphics and Picasso96 24bit color support
Window patterns - Unlimited and easily configurable via tooltypes
Optimised backgroundpatterns routine - Patterns can be tiled, centred or even scaled to fit into the windows. With the use of render.library, you get full control over the dithering and pen usage of your patterns
Live updating window scrolling - Supports middle mouse button panning too!
Drawer windows can be iconified
Menu preferences - You can enjoy fully configurable menus (includes ToolsDaemon and Parm import), including support for context-sensitive Popup menus
Application Interface (API) - Anything is possible from outside the program itself
Custom preference programs - For both palette and patterns. A pen-locker is not required any more
Nearly all Workbench preferences are used
Installation is very easy
Supports PNG icons with alpha channel and real transparency
Displays OS3.5 GlowIcons even on OS3.1 machines
Scalable icons
Thumbnail preview icons for images - Thumbnails can be permanently saved in icons
Completely confgurable, filetype-specific user-definable popup menus and tooltips
Plugin system to exchange or add features - It enhances the Workbench and makes it more configurable
Filetype plugins to display filetype-specific information. - Currently, EXIF information viewer for JPEG images is included.
Iconborders - Nice looking, Icontext variations (normal, shadowed, outlined)
Screentitle text - Shows what you want, how you want
Plugin included for 100% support of OS3.9 Workbench features
Plugin included for AREXX API compatible to OS3.9 Workbench
Online update with updater.module
And much, much more...

as a small example you can make a window small on background and open it again by doubleclick. A feature available in magellan and amigaos 3.2 but not on wanderer. Themeing from aros also works

That's a simple future and we can add to wanderer, wanderer needs some surgical changes.
A graphical artist to redesign wanderer top to bottom than we
Developers to rework on and implement new design to wanderer..

I had thought about adding the Scalos option on AROS One as I did on my AfA One, see link, but it didn't satisfy me, you would need to have a more updated version of ScalOS, see second link:

@serk118uk
People look at such cosmetic changes, users are "usually" very graphic orientated. Updated and improved wanderer would make more impression on people than rewritten USB driver even if the driver was much more work than the improvements in wanderer

I will see how far it gets with what is available at the moment. It is experience for me I want to get for a later possible aros distribution based on AxRuntime

Good to see you are making progress. Interesting what will be the final results of your experiments :)

I agree, you have to bet on Wander, once improved it will be more qualitative and more modern than any Workbench or its derivative !
-
Kal talked one time about a new version of wanderer in his harddisk with new feature but not finished yet. If there would be a bounty for new version with features at least comparable to other existing desktops I would support it. As long there is nothing I can only use existing options.

I have made some progress... Scalos now works as desktop replacement.
Next I look at are filetypes and menue

It's a shame he hasn't finished it yet however it is a huge amount of work he put into it. Just the plugin system alone would be great.

Hi I have a problem
I have managed to get it working as full desktop replacement. Now I would like to experiment with filetypes and menu but I have the problem that both prefs require filetype and menu plugin added. There are plugins in the package (contrib) but I only get a error if I try to add them. Could you look at it?
-
I have made another progress
http://aros-platform.de/Scalos_menu.png
prefs seem to work now. Looking not bad. From first views it seems you can do context menu specific f.e. for a png and define filetypes. Of course GUI different to magellan but the options are extensive too. I will report when I progress

Indeed, is not looking back. Is there something wrong with Decoration? Seems like windows use default 3.1 look.
Does this mean the "menu/prefs pluging problem" you reported in previous post is solved?
-
yes, it needs some files in same directory as prefs files to work
from now it seems to work

yes I will test next days
Plugin system is nice. For example I have added 3.9 plugin that promises to add behavior of AmigaOS 3.9. Also Themeing works and is visible (in opposite to magellan that implements all independenly). All in all nice. You have plenty of options available f.e. icon related. I am not sure if everything really works in aros. Up to now nobody really used it as far as I know. It looks way more sophisticated than 3.1 or Wanderer. Propably somewhere between Wanderer and Magellan but based on Zune.

the main prefs...

lots of options

Quick question:
What you are doing right now - it is based on AROS 68k or AROS x86_64? If 68k, are you using Scalos from AROS contrib of some Amiga m68k release?
-
Yes I use Aros 68k and try to redo my distribution based on Scalos from Contrib
-
Ok thx.
-
Scalos from Contrib AROS 68k is much more updated than the OS3 version, some time ago I tried to install it on my AROS One 68k but it didn't work well, I had used the OS3 version.
-
I do not know what was the reason but now everything seems to work including prefs :)

I have made some progress with Scalos again. I am currently defining the def icons with default tools. Scalos is certainly more amiga-like than magellan that is more powerful in certain areas. For amiga fans scalos is porpably the more suited solution.
-
Scalos also has problems on AROS 68k, especially on an RTG screen with PNG icons the windows open slower compared to Wanderer which is much lighter and snappier than Scalos.
-
I have just uploaded the first Scalos Version of Aros Vision for UAE. As it says, it uses scalos as desktop that is more amiga like than magellan. On the other hand less configurable in some areas. A matter of taste. Integrated software and features are the same as in magellan. You can download it here:
