Hi ppl,
What apps, tools used day to day for your needs?
I give you my one.
I use OWB daily..
Gcc daily.
Vim, editor,mix editors I use.
I can not use email programs like simple mail, yam on aros and I don't know what needed them to work, I use my phone for emails.
Lets gather all needed needed apps on aros for the moment.
I am working on multiple projects for aros but they are my choice.
I also want to take a project that we will need and use daily not another clone we already have..
-
In fact replicating already existing programs is just a waste of time, in my opinion it is necessary to add what is missing to AROS so as to become autonomous in operations without the need for external OS.
I am not a developer but in my small way I try to give my contribution, now I'm working on Dopus4 where I'm associating to the best tool all the most common files.
Now I have finished the associations to all the text files like PDF, Guide, HTLM, TXT, etcc, then will be associated device libraries and all the system files that have an extension with program "Version", so that with a click you can see the version and other info on the clicked files.
The only problem encountered on Dopus4 "AROS" are the text files without extension, it is solved by removing the protection bit "E" but this is a problem to do it to all files, other solution is to associate "Read" to all files without extension, but this will also show the executables as text and then they will no longer be executable at double click.
Of course it's a kind of bug only for Dopus4 AROS version, other Dopus4 of other OS don't have this problem.

Hi Serk
I use OWB always, MPlayer, AudioEvolution, and current Paint App for little works, I don't do many photos anyway I used Framebuild for my collection, I think that making this program a simple video editing software is something exclusive for Aros :)
-
Then we don't have a 3D graphics program, the only sources we can use are those of Raystorm and Skulpt3D :-\
-
I can not use email programs like simple mail, yam on aros and I don't know what needed them to work,
YAM seems to have problems closing requests! There are some Experimental Nightly Build (https://github.com/jens-maus/yam/releases/tag/nightly-builds) of YAM that support the new AmiSSL 4.9/10 but there is no AROS version :(

I really do believe AROS should have working email client , we use emails all the times..
-Yam (I will work on this).
-Dopus (needs fixing).
-OWB (needs update).
What else???
-
Yes on AROS you need the essential applications first, Drivers first, many people try to install AROS HERE (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?p=1503998#post1503998) some examplesand then abandon because much of the hardware in their possession is not supported, better to build on a solid foundation than on the sand of the desert :)
-
Yahoo Mail works with OWB, you can also import other accounts in it, you should make a first configuration on Windows or Linux this regarding the importation of other accounts because you need to authenticate with them

yes :)

If you have the problem of "requests" that don't close, the fault is in "muimaster.library", the version included in the deadwood distros seems to be corrupted, you have to replace it with a previous one.
Now YAM is working fine for me but only with incoming email, outgoing I have to understand if I'm doing something wrong!
-
it is not worthwhile to use these email clients, especially you need to organize your mail :)
-

Now YAM works perfectly, after replacing the muimaster.library and reconfiguring everything, it is now possible to send and receive emails. 8)

I have YAM 2.9 installed , i try imap and pop but failed to connect my gmail..
what steps you have taken to configure?

This is my configuration with my provider "LIBERO", important, if you use VM make sure you don't have any other E-mail Managers open.
TAB TCP/IP
POP3:
Server/Port= popmail.libero.it
Authentication= Simple password
Username= My Email
Password= My Email Password
SMTP:
Server/Port= smtp.libero.it
Authentication= LOGIN
User ID= My Email
Password= My Email Password
-
Whats your YAM version and also what port numbers you are using..
thanks
-
I use the latest version of YAM for AROS YAM 2.9p1:
https://github.com/jens-maus/yam/releases/tag/2.9p1
LIBERO has its own Port numbers, but the default preset numbers on YAM work
-
Yes libero mail works another user here in the forum uses this provider with Yam, but be careful always to always save a copy of messages on the server
-
Serk
There is a better service to access Yam and with all the accounts you have, just register on Email.it and create an email account and then request the forwarding to the desired client in this case Yam without security service, the site it is also in English
-
Whats your YAM version and also what port numbers you are using..
thanks
For Port numbers use the ones preset on YAM that is:
POP3= 110
SMTP= 25
Regarding Username and Password avoid copy-paste, write everything by hand, send and save.
The recent "Nightly Build" v2.10 tested on OS3 works better, there is a tab to verify the data entered for both POP3 and SMTP, see screenshot.
Hopefully the AROS x86 version will be completed and distributed.
-
in the email.it service not for a fee you cannot download the mail of other connected accounts but you can buy a box with 25 euros a year that gives you the chance to do it always with yam I will do it
-
If you want to use the most advanced IMAP service of the simplemail jobs without problems but with connections that do not use SSL Gmail and Yahoo use these type of connections, the email.it portal has both available options, however with OWB you can access Yahoo mail and configure all the email accounts you have in it

Framework. We need all sort of middleware that could HELP porting software. And I don't necessarily mean huge tasks like GTK or QT, but just think about AmiSSL. We're missing many email functionalities and even silly network clients just because of security library missing.
Please port that first.

In the attached link are available the sources of the latest version of AmiSSL 4.10
https://github.com/jens-maus/amissl/releases/tag/4.10

I don't know and so much that you don't connect to the site we were working on it but it was still only at the beginning I would try to fill out skulpt3d if you are possible we have nothing of the genre on aros is an excellent tool of raytracing uses wazp3d

Yes. I was working on a raytracer app. But more is better. If you can somehow port Skulpt3d or something similar that would be great. I'll start working at it again at some point.
I'm taking a bit of a Fall Break at the moment for rest and relaxation trying a bit of woodworking and wooden model shipbuilding to clear the mind. It's kinda like Spring Gardening or Spring Cleaning. Its necessary but satisfying. :)

Good rest miker :)

What is the quickest fix for the lack of apps? One word: emulators. They will buy time for natural apps to be developed. Many of the computer emulators are open source. Even shapeshifter old mac emulator would help it continue to work on. Even a gem emulator would help. Future projects could include open source mac andriod and pc emulators, but that would be a few years down the road.
-
Yes Emulators are a solution, on AROS you don't need big applications, you need system stability and small useful programs including an updated browser, now only the latest version of OWB can access HTTPS sites, but on its side it doesn't manage Youtube videos, which previous versions did.
-
I access secure sites with the previous version of odyssey you need to update certificates

Aros has Janus-UAE and you can run in coherency mode completely transparent from the hosted system, then there exists dosbox if you want :)

OWB Latest Version 16-12-2018 accesses on HTTPS even with old certificates, but videos from Youtube don't work.
OWB Version 27-03-2016 no longer accesses on HTTPS even if you update the certificates, but the videos from Youtube works
OWB Version 26-03-2016 not supported, it crashes as soon as it's started
Since September 30 there have been changes on the Web, even Chrome on Win7 can't access HTTPS sites directly, it can only do so by entering with secondary unsecured access, even Firefox allows access on this kind of sites from a secondary port but automatically.
-
I use these two versions and upgrade the certificates present in another thread on this forum and works fine
http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/network/browser/owb-1.25.i386-aros.zip
http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/network/browser/odyssey-1.25-11.i386-aros.zip
-

This is the same as the one posted above i.e. 27-03-2016 and does not access HTTPS sites even if you update the certificates
http://archives.aros-exec.org/share/network/browser/odyssey-1.25-11.i386-aros.zip
This is just an executable a bit newer than the previous one from 29.08.2016 and can access HTTPS sites, plus it also works Youtube videos, it's probably the best choice even if the newest one from 16-12-2018 is faster, in any case it's better to keep all the executables maybe in a subfolder.
-
I use a SSD disk prices are affordable to make an upgrade to your PC

Whats the point of AROS if we emulate or use other OS'es to cover what we dont have.
quickest fix for me is to have basic daily used apps like
--Browser (one for daily browsing)
--Email cliend (one just good one)
--DTP (One Good stable and usable)
--Graphics (One good Paint Program)
--Text Editor (one good one and we have one)
--Music tracker/player/editor (One simple good one as long as it does the job)
--Video (Player/Editor , One good one not billion)
--Clean SDK/ good development tools and guide , dont forget software comes from this area.
I mean we already have a most just maybe not all, I wish developers will focus on some needed software rather than building aros on multi arch, we have very talented coders on board and missing leadership maybe..
What is missing from API that all focuses are on aros core rather than needed software..
Whats the point of aros if i have to use windows to browse or use email clients..
-
I use Aros every day there are many years that I don't use Windows and similar, I think I'm not the only one, perhaps for some users maybe it could be frustrating not to be able to access Facebook and also to some other site with Odyssey, but we must have a patient , I myself collaborating with some programmer to develop some applications because I care a lot to the future of Aros, certainly the road of emulation does not like me at all

There are only so many hours in a day. My focus in on keeping the system running AND providing a clean and working SDK for developers like you to port and develop software :)

both these are old emulators that basicly run software from 30 years ago. the community if it is to grow needs access access to ability to run much newer software. Idealy something like virtual Box that would let you run even win 10 or the newest linux on the same machine. even a kvm linux running mac os 10. this would also fix the browser problem. I meantion os 9 emulator for mac os because it;s software is about 10 years newer than old amiga os and could be a quick first easy step.
-
In my opinion the best solution on AROS is to develop a WINE interpreter in order to run Windows Applications directly.

you understand your point of view but we are a small community and the remaining programmers are already worried about other things, both at the system level and for third-party applications and then only in a few could do something level, all that There is now possible thanks to a great effort of a team of programmers who now no longer exists

Since Aros can be run over the top of Linux and theirs already the ability to launch Linux apps from the desktop, perhaps we reverse the problem. A distro with many Linux emulators controlled by Aros. A better clipboard would be needed. Built-in utilities to share data. Would know even add the ability to play steam games lol. This would be less work.
-
The time that is lost in creating emulators can be invested on AROS, adding Linux libraries as happened on OS4 creates a hybrid system where fixing bugs is much more difficult.
Why complicate your life with Linux when AROS like Amiga is the most beautiful and simple system in the world, Linux has existed for 30 years and has never exceeded 2% of users, this explains how much Linux is liked in the world.

a solution so exists in the embryonic phase and it is called Arix but perhaps we are out of themselves in the thread

As a DTP program you like Rnopublisher, then I'm giving a contribution to Rnotunes an audio player :)

I am thinking of donating $50-100 each month after Christmas for a programmer working on this project. Why not more? I am on disability, with limited income. Since emulators will be included- I am thinking at least 1 blue ray ISO, possibly more. This would be a max edition supporting 4-6 cores and at least 16 meg of memory. These specs are needed if you run a bigger 2nd OS. A lot of things are still in the air. don't plan on it for at least 1 year from now.

I am with you 100000 percent , I am here because I see AROS as amiga and I can run on my laptop , I don't have windows, mac or Linux or some other os .
I emulate amiga 68k via AROS if I needed but very rarely.
Why emulate Linux or other os'es to run this or that, instead remove aros and install windows and you don't have any problem and enjoy.

I have been using Aros for many years and for me it is like themselves using my old Amiga, I purely use Odyssey and some other native program, the thing that worries me most is precisely the latter because there are so many years that is not updated :-\

in fact, I use Windows for things you can't do with AmigaOS or AROS, I managed many PCs in the Corporate Network where I worked, but when I have to have fun and spend my free time I do it with Amiga and AROS.

Same here. I use Windows 10 for design work and I manage some others pc's for the company. But for fun and as a hobby I enjoy Amiga OS and AROS.

I have a little laptop where I installed Linux Debian and it's very good despite his years, a Windows solution with it is impossible
