Title: RIP AE No more - AE Lives again!!!
Post by: 4pLaY on July 19, 2023, 01:30:16 AM
Hey all,

Aros Exec will go down, for good on 19.09.2023. Due to my new health situation and also income, i do no longer have the health or even money to keep this (and other) sites online.

I opened AE in march i think it was of 2004 and have been running this site for you guys ever since, but at some point, it has to stop and for me that is now.

I am also pulling out of Archives, which is another webpage i started. Here you can keep it up yourself, its not running on anything i control.

I will still keep the AROS Discord up, but if anyone wants to take it over, let me know.

That is my short and simple goodbye.

Dear Ola,

I am very sorry to hear about your current situation. In that regards I wish for you (and your family) the strength and wisdom to cope with your current situation. I wish you all the best in the world.

I want to thank you for the time that you have spend on/with us with your dedication for the Amiga and Aros scene (at least that is where I know you from).

I can't thank you enough for all the conversations we had, the input you have given me/us and the support & wisdom you have shared with us over all these years. It has been a long (and remarkable) time.

I find it remarkable that even in a time like this you were able to give us notice of your current situation. It is one of the examples that defines you as a person.

Note that even in absence you will for always be in our thoughts.

Regards
Ron.T

Really sad news; AROS-Exec  is an invaluable resource but health has to come first.

All the very best,
Nigel.

This is sad news indeed! Thank you for all your many years of service in supporting AROS and its derivatives. Perhaps, until then someone can migrate the content to another hosting service if you are willing to provide backups?

Alternatively, I can keep https://www.arosworld.org (https://www.arosworld.org)  active if no solution is found for AE. I had plans to discontinue it as well due to almost zero traffic on it but I guess that is not a good idea yet.

Good luck to you 4pLaY.

Kind Regards,
AmigaMia

Sad you hear about your health issues   I hope you are able to manage them   Thanks for all you have done in keeping AROS-EXEC going

Would you be willing to provide a backup of the site so that someone or others could host this great resource on another provider

I'm willing to help out where needed, not ready to let this site go quite yet

What's required for the Archives

Thank you for supporting AROS community for last 20 years. AROS-Exec has been a way for all of us to get together, discuss our hobby and even organize our common work. I wish you all the best and many good days to come.

At the moment I think it's a good idea to transition to Aros World, you also have to think about archives if you have expenses to incur I can contribute

That's really sad but health is the most important thing and that's what you should focus on. I hope that you recover as much as possible.

How much important is / was AE, but it's a just site and someone else of the community can hand it over and keep it running.

I hope that is possible if 4play is agreeable to it and so arrangements can be made     There is still lots of time and I'd like to keep this a public discussion   Just have to wait for 4play, when he's able, to check back in

Hello 4pLaY

sad to hear and I know how much work it is to keep something working so long. Not many sites have that kind of history these times.

And it is for sure not easy to take the step and close it down, but better to make a clear cut if it is necessary.

Wish you all the best and I hope to see you in some other forum or wherever in the future. Aros still wants you  ;).

Thanks for the countless hours of work!

Oli

If there is any interest in that, I can offer to host AROS Exec on the MorphZone server.
It would be good to copy the existing database in some place, and being accessible even in read-only mode.
We already lost the old aros-exec with an incredible knowledge base and now it's again same, unfortunately.

That's the downside of all those forums. Old amiga newsgroups are still accessible, forum content gets lost most of the time when the forum dies.

It is not about watching anything burn, but your offer solves half the problem. Who is going to do the work of moving the site and setting it up? So far, not a single person has offered to take on the work of actually running and keeping it maintained.

Unfortunately I'm not a sysadmin, so I can't help here.
I can help with coding or quality assurance. And give some money, if needed, as I did in the past.

@4pLaY: do you think that both amigalife and the old aros-exec could be dumped & moved to another site?
Title: Re: RIP AE
Post by: Wildstar on September 01, 2023, 09:32:17 PM
First, the main thing immediately would be money to keep it hosted. As for "maintaining" and moderating, give some users privileges to moderate. Well, good people. As for full admin status, that could take a little longer but maybe someone takes over. The important part is transferring the ownership of the accounts with any hosting service. There is no particular reason to actually shut down. If the forum's web software is robust, it should be able to stay operational 24/7 for considerable number of months as long as the hosting bills are paid for.

It's not like it is actually a fulltime job. Especially if the community self-moderate itself well by mere good behavior. Moderators can be appointed to keep the site clean of bot posts and such and even handle the day to day issues of resolving dramas that flares up every so often. People haven't offered to move the site and migrate it over for the following reasons: A) It might not be necessary to actually do that. B) Those are details to resolve after initial dialogue and obtaining the details of what needs to be done.

In general, it should not be that much of a problem to transfer account ownership with the hosting platforms regarding any sort of billing related matters. Even a general partnership group under some sort of organizational name operated by the community could be formed and funding be facilitated by the community for the community and then its obviously there may be additional persons appointed with admin level access to the forum and whatever else. Is it really necessary to migrate to a different web and domain hosting services?

@Wildstar: people already moved on another site, which has already a sysadmin which is taking care of it.
IMO it should be enough to dump and database of this site and the old AROS-Exec, giving the possibility to access in read-only mode to the threads & comments, because it's a huge knowledge base.
The rest can be continued on the new site.
However the point is always the same: who could do that dump?

I'm very sorry to hear about your health issues, I hope things get better for you.

I've enjoyed these forums for years and have learned a lot from them.
It runs on SMF, should be fairly easy to move the whole thing to a new host without losing data.

Well, moving the site would depend on what needs to be installed at the destination to begin with (and what panel/software can be used, if any). Setting up SMF itself should not be that difficult to do (restoring a backup is another matter, though documented but, could proof not to be that easy as advertised).

Running it, I guess would be his (when accepting anyone's offer) responsibility thereby assuming keeping track of the dns records, domain  name, certificate(s) as well as hosting and indeed there would have to be someone for maintaining that (not really my virtue).

I can at least offer to help out moderating when things are running. For the other stuff I have no experience other then some fiddling locally with virtual machines meaning that I could try and take a shot at moving stuff but that it could end up badly and for sure would need some help with the host side of things (I know just enough to do some serious damage in/with my ignorance).

I am not the guy who likes forum software, but there seems to be a way to move a SMF forum to a static page:

Title: Re: RIP AE
Post by: magorium on September 05, 2023, 03:08:42 PM
I am currently at the P of LAMP.

But besides that, if it is so dear to your heart then make a backup yourself ? I've already done so last month (need to update that btw) and though it does not contain the attachments nor fancy graphics it does contain all the textual contents, nicely tucked away in a single html per thread topic (4.1 MB zipped).

Scraping the attachments and graphics is also possible for instance with selenium webdriver but I wanted to use my own solution but have not been able to get around to login properly (hence my LAMP setup to be able to debug that). So next is a SMF install and try to debug but when reached the stage of having a proper working SMF install I could just as well give those instructions at the link from o1i a spin).
Title: Re: RIP AE
Post by: cdimauro on September 05, 2023, 11:24:34 PM
I'm to P as well, but it stands for Python and not PHP (I had little experience in the past, but only for some backend stuff). And very limited L & A experience.
However if a single HTML per thread takes 4MB then it looks like an impractical solution (especially for the old AROS-Exec, which had tons of threads).

Anyway, the above solution still requires database access. Maybe it makes more sense to dump it and then if someone has experience with SMF he/she can recreate the forum somewhere else.

rofl.

But yeah. For downloading the threads python will do as well (i wrote it in Pascal but you can just as well use bash (wget/curl) or something else though respect the website and not hammer it -> about 40 minutes for all threads with a delay of 1 second per thread).

No, not per thread  ;D . I meant for /all/ threads.

Anyway, the above solution still requires database access.
Not for having the textual contents only, as an example that you can feed wget/curl: https://ae.amigalife.org/index.php?action=printpage;topic=1154.0

Then, the most difficult part ... how on earth do we count numbers... hmz... no idea  ;)

Having a (proper) backup makes more sense but does require a bit more work.

Do we have the backups anywhere? I already pay for a hosting and I could try to integrate SMF in my LAMP hosting service. I have options to set add-on domains and/or subdomains to arosworld.org.

I may need to play with the settings of course.

I think that only 4pLaY could do it: AFAIR he is the only one which has admin rights here.

Things are not going to happen automatically. 4play already expressed that.

So, in case there isn't already something worked out with anyone else I would suggest f.e. to amigamia to contact 4play in a pm and ask if he is ok for the one that wants to do it and ask 4play to backup his database (using the host software, the SMF documentation mentions not using the SMF backup function), the forum files and I assume the admin password for the SMF forums (or ask if he could add another user with equal admin rights to take over the installed SMF) and have all required information and files accessible somewhere. That is unless 4play wants you to do the backup yourself as well (in which case more/other details of the current hoster are required)

The destination requires LAMP, a database used for SMF and a user that controls that database. Then restore the original database to that, then the forums files, and run the repair script (note that there are specific instructions in which order to do that) and you should be done (in theory).

I got SMF running on my LAMP server but haven't come around yet making a backup and restore it to another LAMP server in order to see what issues you might be able to run into.

My offer for the old AROS-Exec included migrating the site. This is really not an issue.

Finding people interested in being admins or moderators is something to do once the data has been moved and the sites are back up and running.
