Title: AmigOS kill Aros
Post by: Cisano on December 28, 2022, 11:05:57 AM
“I regret every day my A3000.
I don’t like Windows, Osx, Linux."

Hi to everyone.

I follow Aros since the first day.
I considere it a real act of love for the Amiga by their programmers.
But many Amiga users (people still use the old hardware) contempt it.
Why? Because it is not Amiga.

There is something of wrong about Aros and I’d like to discuss with you.

Aros is a souless bad name
It is necessary to change it.
Chris Edwards with his Pimiga is been very clever. We must learn from him.
Changing the name and to have inside the Amiga word, i.e. AmigOS, can capture ex Amiga developers and give back the Amiga soul at this project.
We can choose all togheter the name.

Amiga as primary OS
What we need? Firefox, Thunderbird and Libreoffice.
When? On this road, never.
RISC Os and Haiku (with Libreoffice and Krita) have more chance.

Drivers for PC hardware, an impossible dream.
Why continue to follow the dream? Too much hardware. To write a driver is for a few.
If one day we have the driver for the 3060ti, we can play Quake2 and Doom at 1500 fps.
Really we need?

The goal
We have Raspberry, Banana, Orange PI, closed platform.
To focus on one small pieces of hardware ALL THE DEVELOPERS and their energy, can give us an Amiga runs 100% of its power in a near future.
A working OS, FAST and STABLE on its hardware, is the basis for develop the missing software, with the tools inside the OS.

Conclusion
It is almost 30 years Aros is with us, and we don’t have nothing in our hands.
Don’t be angry.
That means, something is wrong or maybe all.
Paolo and all the other developers, I know the great work you have done, but it is time to change path, because the Amiga generation, don’t live forever and many of them are tired.

Happy new year AmigOS  ;D

Hi Cisano, it's not the name that makes people turn their noses up at it, AROS is a great name and has always been side by side with AMIGA, AROS was the first child of "AMiGA".

What Amiga users never liked was that AROS ran on Hardwre PC, in the past Windows was synonymous with hatred and contempt, but even now it happens, now even shadowing with Linux has turned many Amiga users' noses up.
Even for OS4 it happened that some people did not well accept that Linux libraries and applications are used on OS4.

Unfortunately the dislike for AROS you also find it among AROS users, as an example there are many AROS users who ignore my AROS One and not only that, they misjudge it without having tried it and when they discuss AROS they ignore it.

Just release it under a new name. Sources are free and the license permits it. Nothing to discuss.

is a discussion a bit ambiguous aros in fact is the workbench 3.1 for x86, I use it for years, it is not difficult to find hardware for it if you do not like it is your personal thing there is a community and it is a reality as are other niche OS outside and inside the amiga world, the software?I am not interested in using krita or libreoffice when I have to do something with what I have and I just need we have fun with Aros and development will go on, we won't have sata support? do you know how many computers can be used with this system Amigaos will not kill anyone and will not be in the future Aros will live :D

A name change will do nothing. If anything it will have a negative effect.
People also develop what they like to develop. Theyre not paid developers. Trying to dictate what people should work on is, quite frankly, rude and entitled.
Pimiga is just an emulation package. There's nothing it can do that AROS using an Amiga emulator cant do. AROS on the other hand can do things that Pimiga can't.
As for hardware support, AROS has more hardware support than pretty much all other Amiga-noid OSes combined. It may not support all hardware out there, but restricting it to singular platforms wont solve anything. People will still want it to run on their own hardware. The more limited that pool of hardware the fewer people that will try it.

As for Haiku and Risc OS having the apps you mentioned, theyre *nix and Windows derived OSes, so the ports are muuuuuch easier with little effort needing to be put into them.

And the "problems" you mention are Amiga OS, and alternative OS problems, not restricted to AROS.

People who are into this scene are typically tinkerers who just want an Amiga derived platform. This is part of the reason people don't take to distros. The one they do is the most popular because it's been the longest standing.
AROS (on anything Amiga derived) will always be niche. There's nothing you can do about it. If you want something done you need to do it yourself, find someone who is interested in doing it, or even pay someone to do it. There's no getting around this. It's up to the individual whether they accept and embrace this or not.

For the records, Amigos (AmigOS) in spanish means friends.

Anyway I understand what all you say.
I don't agree with the path and name.
I am not able to creat a new path (I can program but my skill is not enough).

Never mind. I tried  :)

Bye.

If you are even an inexperienced developer it doesn't matter, your contribution will always be important to us AROS users.

.......

Friends in Italian, on the other hand, is called "AMICO" (masculine) while "AMICA" (feminine)

In Italy there is also a famous Italian magazine called AMICA:
